How to find usThe school is located within a short train or bus journey away from Leicester city centre. We are situated less than a five-minute walk from Narborough train station. There are also plenty of parking spaces available outside the School. Other major cities in the area such as Nottingham and Derby are also within easy reach either by car or by public transport. Please see the Links page for the public transport information.
An annual membership fee is £5 per household. This entitles you to vote in the General Annual Meeting and take part in social activities. A school fee is £10 per term per child. There are two terms in every calendar year. Adult lessons are paid in advance. There are two terms in every calendar year that are priced differently and paid separately. The fee for the autumn term is £35 and the fee for the spring term is £50.
Drop into our café for a cup of freshly brewed Finnish coffee and home-made cakes, which are available at very reasonable prices. We also have a small selection of Finnish goods for sale. The cafe is open on every school day.
We are in the process of setting up our own library of Finnish books, DVDs, videos, magazines, etc. We would be grateful for any donations of the above. If you have any material you would like to donate please let us know.
Our school follows Finnish school traditions by having a Christmas Party and End of the school year celebration at the end of each of the two terms. We also arrange social activities for parents.
We are always happy to get more volunteers involved in our activities. As the school cannot run without members' commitment and active involvement, we need your help. Get in touch or drop in and we can have a chat about how you could help.
Volunteering opportunities are available in the following areas:
(Supply) teaching/assisting in the classroom
Committee membership
Everyday running of the school
Baking for the café/running the café Teachers receive a payment for their contribution. This could be an ideal part time job for a student for example wanting to pursue a career in teaching. We would also welcome the help of mature people who would be prepared to assist in reading stories to children and to reminisce about life in Finland in the old days.
The school was founded in January 2009 and is largely funded by the Finnish National Board of Education (Opetushallitus; www.oph.fi) through Finland Society (Suomi-Seura: www.suomi-seura.fi). We are also supported in the UK by Finn-Guild (www.finn-guild.org).
